Dado joints hold the box square
A dado is a groove cut into the side panel that the bottom or shelf sits in. It gives a large glue surface and locates the part exactly, so the box goes together square and stays that way. Screws pull the joint tight while the glue cures.
Cheaper boxes rely on butt joints held by staples or cam fittings. They work until the box is racked during delivery or loaded heavily. A dadoed plywood box shrugs off both.

Dovetailed drawers
A dovetail joint locks the drawer front and sides together mechanically, so the joint cannot pull apart even if the glue fails. Combined with a bottom captured on four sides, it makes a drawer box that lasts as long as the house.
Every drawer box is built to its own opening, so the gap between drawer and cabinet side stays within the tolerance the runner needs. That precision is what makes a drawer glide silently. Runners that are forced into a slightly wrong opening bind, wear and lose their soft-close action within a few years.

We build boxes from 3/4-inch cabinet-grade plywood that meets the TSCA Title VI formaldehyde standard. Plywood holds screws well, resists water better than particleboard and stays stable. Doors and face frames use solid hardwood or MDF, depending on the finish.
